So much to plant in April!

April in the Garden

Getting an Early Start on Garden Season

Spring is here and it is in full swing! We are still a few weeks away from our last frost, but there are so many things that can go in the ground now! Here in growing zone 6, we are already planting so much, and prepping our garden for all our warm-weather crops like tomatoes, corn, peppers, and annual flowers.

Read on to learn what else we are doing in the garden this month...

What is Companion Planting?

Companion planting is a time-tested gardening method that pairs plants together to boost growth, deter pests, and improve flavor. By planting certain herbs, flowers, or vegetables near one another, you can create a more balanced and resilient garden ecosystem. For example, marigolds can repel certain pests from tomatoes, and basil not only enhances tomato flavor but also wards off aphids. Whether you're growing in beds or containers, smart plant pairings can make a big difference in your harvest.

Here are a few examples to get you started:

April Gardening in Zone 6 and Above: What to Plant Now

April showers will only bring May flowers for those who made sure to plant! It's not too late to sow peas, spinach, broccoli, kale, cilantro, and lettuce directly in the ground, although it's a little too late to start seeds for later warm-weather transplants, such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. This is also still a good time time to plant some root crops like potatoes, turnips, beets, carrots, and radishes, who all do great in cool, wet soil.

Think of it this way: anything that is completely covered by soil won't be bothered by a light frost while we wait out April!

What we are doing in the garden in April:

Broadcast sowing wildflower seed

Direct sowing peas and beans

Planting potatoes and other root veggies

Direct sowing leafy greens

Tending to greenhouse starts...and starting more seeds!

Uncovering beds to assess wet spots and soil condition

Mulching
