Sustainable Celebrations of Love
Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and while it's a time to celebrate love, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to think about how we can show love for our planet. This year, let’s skip the roses and explore ways to make this February 14th not only special for our loved ones, but also kinder to the Earth.
What’s the matter with roses?
You might be surprised to learn that roses, often considered the quintessential Valentine’s Day flower, can have a significant environmental footprint. Many of the roses sold in stores around Valentine’s Day are grown in countries with few regulations around forced labor or pesticide use, and the transportation of these flowers – often by air – generates a tremendous amount of carbon emissions. Add in the use of water- and chemical-intensive farming practices, and the environmental cost of that bouquet quickly multiplies.
Instead of traditional roses, consider more sustainable options that don’t come with a baggage of environmental harm!
Sustainable Valentine’s Day Ideas:
1. Locally Grown Flowers
Seek out local florists or farmers’ markets for impressive seasonal or dried flowers. Grown closer to home, buying locally grown reduces transportation emissions, and often supports small-scale farms, keeping your money in your community and supporting local agriculture.
2. Potted Plants
Give a gift that keeps on giving. Potted plants are a lasting reminder of love and beauty, plus they help purify the air in our homes. Choose low-maintenance plants like succulents, snake plants, or herbs, which are easy to care for and can thrive indoors.
3. DIY Foraged Floral Arrangements
For a romantic and personal touch, gather wildflowers (where available in February!) or forage for beautiful winter greenery. Any of your local flower farms may also have dried flowers available this time of year! Get creative! Make a wreath or just a simple table arrangement for an unforgettably meaningful show of love for your partner and the planet.
4. Edible Gifts
How about a delicious and eco-friendly edible gift? Think homemade desserts, chocolates from fair-trade sources, or seasonal fruits. Not only do they nourish the body, but they also minimize waste and emissions!
5. Experiences Over Things
Another great way to show your love sustainably is by gifting experiences rather than material goods. Consider making a home-cooked meal together, taking a hike in nature, or enjoying a local activity that supports the community. Here at Sweet Farm, we are helping folks celebrate by spending the day with snuggy rescued animals and farm-grown dried flowers to take home for a truly unforgettable Valentine's Day. There are still a few tickets left if you are local to the Finger Lakes! Not near Upstate New York? Find animal sanctuaries near you to visit for an unforgettable experience!
